The Marine Mammal Observatory of the Guadeloupean Archipelago (OMMAG) is a participatory science network who works toward the understanding and conservation of marine mammals.

Our actions take many forms, including gathering community-sourced data on marine mammals. This data is vital to research, clarifying the abundance, distribution, seasonality, and other key patterns of around twenty species frequenting the waters of the French Antilles.

Moreover, OMMAG provides both logistical and human support for any initiative or project dedicated to expanding knowledge of marine mammals, their habitats, and ways to protect them. This notably involves supporting cultural and scientific projects.

The data collected by OMMAG, even without images, are identified, sorted, validated, and then made available to Research and the Agoa Marine Mammal Sanctuary in the French Antilles.

Observations, whether accompanied by photos or videos or not, are of utmost importance for the accurate identification of species and individual animals.
Any observer may submit their records to their regional contact, who will review, supplement, and forward them to OMMAG.

OMMAG’s ethical policy is clear: these data may only be used for scientific or educational purposes, and photographers retain their copyright. Even an image taken with a smartphone can carry significance and be useful for research.
